Dreaming of an inclusive, sustainable, and dynamic living environment

Avenir Saint-Patrick is a non-profit organization (NPO) with the goal of creating a housing cooperative and a collective space from the building and land of Saint-Patrick High School (Maisonneuve Street), which is planned to relocate to Sainte-Foy in 2028. We share the goal of returning this space to the neighborhood community, not only by adding social housing but also by envisioning a space for collective use.

The large size of the land allows for the design and integration of a variety of uses, such as community gardens. The potential of the building is also considerable: we would like to preserve certain existing facilities (e.g., gymnasium, woodworking workshop, music room, etc.) and create multi-purpose rooms to host various organizations (e.g., community workshops, tool library, toy library, etc.), which will help strengthen and enhance the community service offerings in the neighborhood. We also want the cooperative to maintain its close connection with the childcare center (CPE) currently occupying part of the building, Les Loupiots, to ensure its sustainability and to facilitate access to childcare services for families in the neighborhood, including those living in the future cooperative.

We believe it is essential to promote a citizen-driven and cooperative vision in the rehabilitation of the building and land of Saint-Patrick School so that:

  • The heritage of this place is preserved with care and respect for both the built environment and its history;
  • The development project following the school’s departure aligns with the needs of neighborhood residents, creating an integrated living environment designed by and for the surrounding community.

Project Components

Living, Collectivizing, and Greening the Space

Build a housing cooperative

Cooperative is based on principles of solidarity and member involvement. This mode of living and occupying the space fosters mutual aid and inclusion.

Create a community space

Provide a community space where residents of the St-Jean-Baptiste and Montcalm neighborhoods can benefit from nearby services and support.

Preserve public access to the yard

Maintain access to part of the yard for the community.

Preserve the CPE Les Loupiots

Increase their space, located at 1089 Salaberry Avenue.

Greening and enhancing the urban canopy

Explore possibilities such as green roofs and walls, community gardening, play spaces, depending on the community’s needs.

Chosen Structure

An NPO whose mission is to oversee the coexistence of the CPE, the community center, and the cooperative. This model will support the mixed-use dream without placing the burden of cohabitation solely on the cooperative residents.

The NPO will also be responsible for maintaining the ecological and community-oriented goals of the space and evolving them in line with the community’s interests and needs.
